Cris
Cris is a shortened term often used by American rappers, and some other musicians to a lesser extent, referring to the champagne Cristal. A premium champage that sells for $2501 or more, Cristal became very popular among the rappers, who are often looking for high-priced objects as symbolic means of flaunting their money. However, unlike its competing champagnes (used instead of competing Bruts as it is at too high a level for Bruts not from Champagne), the Cristal achieved a surprising regularity in lyrics. Often the lyrics will refer to "poppin' the Cris," a reference to the cork, as opposed to poppin' a cap in former Vikings wide receiver Cris Carter or sending him into an Orville Redenbacher bag.
Cristal has suffered a severed tie with much of the rap community after an interview with its managing director included a question on whether association with the rappers would hurt sales. The response was uncertainty on whether it would and that champagnes cannot refuse buyers anyway. Still, several rappers have stopped purchasing the product and been very public about doing so, noting that dignifying the question must be racist, as according to the Rappers' Institute of the Social Sciences, 100% of African-Americans are rappers who show up on television in hot tubs covered in bling, bragging about the hos their money attracts as they waive around large bills of cash. Findings from other institutions involved in census work tend not to support the numbers used in the rapper boycott.
